$750,000 “Shoeless Joe” Jackson Bat for Sale and Hank Stram’s Super Bowl IV Ring Tops List at Recent Worthridge Auction

KERNERSVILLE, NC – December 2014

A game used “Shoeless Joe” Jackson bat, valued at $750,000 is currently for sale from Kernersville’s Worthridge Auctions and Retail. The bat, dating from 1919 or 1920, is one of less than a handful in existence.

“No matter how long you are in this business, there are some things that still give you goose bumps. This is certainly one of them,” states Rick Kohl, owner of the local auction house.  Jackson, one of baseball’s all-time best players, was banned for life from Major League Baseball after the 1920 season for his alleged part in the 1919 “Black Sox” betting scandal. “We are excited to have the opportunity to represent this museum quality piece, as well as all of the outstanding items in our last auction.”

Worthridge’s most recent auction ended Saturday, 12/6. Highlights included Hank Stram’s Super Bowl IV ring selling for over $37,500, a Jerry Rice game used helmet selling for just over $10,000 and Walter Payton’s high school Letterman’s jacket selling for $5,332.15.

Worthridge is the culmination of over 20 years of sports memorabilia and collectibles experience.  The company began as a small baseball card store, and over the years has offered some of the finest memorabilia to ever enter the market.

Pre “Sweetness” Payton Letter Jacket Highlights Upcoming Auction From Worthridge

Walter Payton’s Columbia (MS) high school letter jacket will be available in the Worthridge Fall Sports Auction, beginning November 19.533

Here is an opportunity to own the letter jacket of an all-time NFL great.  This is Walter Payton’s personally owned letterman’s jacket from Columbia High School in Mississippi.  Payton attended Jefferson High School for his freshman and sophomore years before integration forced the school to merge with Columbia High School.  Payton became the undisputed star at Columbia, scoring at least one touchdown in every game of his junior and senior seasons.

Walter Payton brought style, grace, and power to the Chicago Bears backfield in 1975.  In doing so, he did the unthinkable by filling the shoes of fellow Bear legend Gayle Sayers.  In 13 NFL seasons, “Sweetness” rushed for over 16,000 yards, was named to nine Pro Bowls, both the 1970’s and 1980’s All-Decade Teams, and the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.  He was the NFL’s MVP on the Bears Super Bowl XX championship team in 1985.

This is a truly unique item that comes directly from the family of the great Walter Payton.  It comes with a LOA from the estate of Walter Payton.

Worthridge is proud to present this item.  It will be a part of their second Sports Memorabilia Auction, running from November 19 until December 6.

1988 Los Angeles Dodgers World Series Trophy and Uniform Highlight Second Worthridge Auction

Two significant items from the Los Angeles Dodgers last championship will be available in the Worthridge Fall Sports Auction, beginning November 19.IMG_3077

First we have the beautiful World Series trophy presented to Dodgers third baseman Jeff Hamilton. The trophy is manufactured by Balfour, and features brass pennants with all the team names surrounding a brass finial with a crown adornment. Press pin facades of the two World Series combatants are featured in the center area. The brass band around the base is inscribed, “Los Angeles Dodgers / World Championship Trophy / Presented by the Commissioner of Baseball / October 20, 1988 / Jeff Hamilton.” These gorgeous trophies are only given to players and team personnel, making this a highly sought-after addition to any Dodgers collection.

Next is the full road uniform worn by Dodger third baseman Jeff Hamilton from the 1988 World Series. Following Kirk Gibson’s dramatic walk-off home run in Game 1, Series MVP Orel Hershiser shut down the potent A’s lineup in Games 2 and 5. In the Sports Illustrated cover photo shown after the final out of the Game 5 clincher, Jeff Hamilton is seen running into the picture to celebrate with Hershiser and catcher Rick Dempsey, wearing the uniform offered here. This is a tremendous piece of memorabilia from the storied franchise’s most recent World Series championship. It is accompanied by an LOA from Jeff Hamilton.
