Les Nunamaker with Tris Speaker Photographs Featured in Upcoming Worthridge Auction

A collection of photos from deadball era catcher Les Nunamaker are highlighted in the next auction from Worthridge. NunamakerBlog

Les Nunamaker and his close friend Tris Speaker are featured in a number of these vintage photographs obtained from the Nunamaker estate. Speaker and Nunamaker were teammates on the Red Sox for from 1911 until 1914 and with the Indians from 1919 until 1922.

Speaker was one of the preeminent outfielders of his era. His .345 career batting average ranks sixth all-time, he amassed over 3500 base hits, and he is first in Major League history with 792 doubles. In the field he holds the all-time record for both assists and double plays as an outfielder. His glove was known as the place “where triples go to die.” Speaker was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in its second class, 1937.

Nunamaker was known as one of the better hitting catchers in the last years of the Deadball Era. Using a whip-like action, his throwing arm was well-known throughout the American League. He was a member of the 1912 World Champion Red Sox as well as Cleveland’s first championship team in 1920.

Worthridge is proud to present this collection, and all items will be a part of their second Memorabilia Auction, running from November 19 until December 6.
